Senior Year Guidebook

There are many industries that do not require education outside of their industry. They will train you to do the job they want! These positions are often considered entry level and you may need to consider furthering your training later. However, sometimes the company you work for will pay or provide tuition assistance to support you further your education.

For many skilled trades, you can participate in an apprenticeship program where you earn while you learn. You learn the required the skills of the trade in the classroom and hands on while, you work alongside a skilled employer. You will earn a wage as you go through the program and oftentimes be required to commit to working for that employer for a certain length of time upon completion.

Many jobs require a specific certification to be qualified to work in that position. This is an official document that states that you have reached a certain status or level of achievement. Certifications can be earned through taking a course or completing a test successfully. Preparation to earn certifications is dependent on what you know and what the certification requires.

This is a school that is designed to train students for a specific job in a skilled trade career. Most importantly, a trade school offers hands-on training to prepare students for actual work in their chosen field.

The military, also know collectively as armed forces, is a heavily armed, highly organized force primarily intended for warfare. It may consist of one or more military branches such as an army, navy, air force, space force, marines, or coast guard. To enter the military, you need to meet with a recruiter.

Joining the Military

An associate degree explores the most fundamental/basic aspects of a subject over a two-year period. These degrees may be earned at community, technical, and vocational colleges.

A bachelors degree is an academic degree conferred by a college or university to those who completes the 4-year undergraduate curriculum. Students do not typically need any previous college experience to enter a 4-year degree program.

A masters degree is generally earned following a bachelors degree. It is a postsecondary credential that typically takes 2-3 years to complete through a college or university. It may build on undergraduate knowledge or help learners from other disciplines enter a new field.

A PhD is a doctorate that is awarded in most academic fields. It is a pure research degree that involves carrying out a literature review, conducting original research, producing a thesis that is written into a dissertation that you must defend. The average person takes about 6-8 years to earn their PhD.
